Build Capable and RISC Inc. Partner to Deliver Modern Learning Ecosystems Without the LMS

Build Capable and RISC Inc have announced a strategic partnership to support workforce development through the combination of Build Capable’s XCL and RISC’s xACTION system. This xAPI-first approach enables a modern learning ecosystem without reliance on the Learning Management System (LMS).

Build Capable is the creator of XCL, a patent-pending tool used to deliver and track online learning experiences at scale unshackled from an LMS.

RISC Inc. is the creator of xACTION, an advanced xAPI processing tool that automates learning data workflows. xACTION’s patented technology receives xAPI statements, applies customized rules and triggers outbound REST API calls to external systems, intelligent statement forwarding, and statement transformation.

These powerful technologies work together to meet organizations’ unique training data and analytics needs. XCL creates the trackable Learning Link and QR code. xACTION takes action when specific data is returned and rules are met, such as updating an HRIS or CRM when someone completes a set of courses in a certification or emailing a manager when an employee successfully meets their annual compliance requirements.

“In many cases, the LMS is an unnecessarily restrictive and expensive way to deliver and track training,” said Sarah Mercier, CEO of Build Capable.  “XCL provides a way to make training available without another platform and login… all while capturing rich, interoperable data that supports better business decisions.”

This may seem like an odd pairing for RISC, a 30+ year pioneer in the learning management space, but RISC’s CEO Art Werkenthin sees this as a natural evolution.

“Many companies still use an LMS for regulatory compliance and managing enrollment.” said Art. “RISC became an early adopter of xAPI with the standpoint that the LMS is just another activity provider in the learning technology stack.  The majority of enterprise systems have not adopted xAPI and data needs to be moved, in a mindful way, between systems and learning records stores.  This need drove the development of xACTION.”

Through this partnership, Build Capable and RISC Inc. will:
  • Align workforce training programs with real-world project and operational needs.
  • Integrate learning and development data with enterprise systems.
  • Improve onboarding, upskilling, and compliance across teams.
  • Enable data-driven insights into workforce performance and readiness.
Beyond their respective platforms, Build Capable and RISC bring deep expertise to support organizations in:
  • Designing custom learning experiences tracked with xAPI.
  • Integrating learning data into enterprise systems.
  • Developing end-to-end strategies for organizations that are building or scaling modern learning ecosystems.
  • Defining data requirements to provide business with the analytics needed to inform decisions and manage organizational capability.

“The field of learning and development is at a pivotal transition point.  We’ve been given the opportunity to step back and decide how to best support real people doing real work without being technology limited” said Build Capable CEO, Sarah C. Mercier. “We’ve tackled award-winning projects with RISC in the past and look forward to more though this partnership.”
